Heading in the right direction for Brendan's loving and affection.

BRENDAN Nelson has been having a close look at Britain’s Conservative leader David Cameron and he mostly likes what he sees.

“It’s quite impressive what he’s been doing,” the Opposition Leader tells Inquirer. “I don’t intend to take our party as far to the Left as that but I am looking very closely at what he is doing.” (Mike Steketee.)

Then what does Mr 7 - 10%'s new role model go and do?

UK Tory leader runs red light, rides bike wrong way

The leader of Britain’s Opposition conservative party, David Cameron, has been caught breaking the law by cycling through red traffic lights and riding the wrong way up a one-way street.

In a statement, Mr Cameron said he knew it was important to obey traffic laws.

He thanked the reporters from UK’s Daily Mirror newspaper who filmed him for keeping him on his toes.

Another one of John's "No one told me" stories. Children overboard, WMDs, AWB anyone?

Troop weapons first class: Howard

John Howard says the troops he has visited have never complained about their weapons.

“Their weapons are okay. In fact more than okay and I asked them that and I can tell you my experience is that if an Australian soldier’s got a gripe about something, he’ll tell you,” he said.

Yes John we believe you without a shadow of a doubt, given that your up there and personal, in the enemies face experience of soldiering fills us with confidence - after all during the Vietnam War (that other debacle where we slavishly - and dishonestly - followed Unca Sam on a comparably shonky premise) you were down there in the trenches with our lads. Oh, you weren't? Oh yes - sorry we forgotified - at that time you were far too busy making sure that the cutting edge meetings of the Young Liberals were adequately provided with scones, cucumber sandwiches, Pimms #1 and Rawleighs Ready Relief. Cheer leaders, you've got to love 'em.

“In fact it’s a great tradition of the Australian army that you seek out anybody in authority and tell him what you think and that’s exactly what they do and they’ve told me that their equipment is first class.”

We believe you Johnno, after all the lads have as many weapons of mass destruction as Brendan Nelson can knock up in his shed on lazy Sunday arvo. First class shanghais, spud guns and Collins Class yonnies and brinnies.

Dannasaurus wrecks.

Report shows Coalition divided over climate change.

Liberal backbencher Danna Vale has defended her position as one of the dissenters.

“So I’m not a scientist but I have real concerns about coming up with the recommendations of a report and then actually finding that we have not taken any evidence on that topic.”

(BTW, anyone who can translate that sentence - no cheating, no using Babelfish - into something approximating plain Engrish will win a gold bicycle and a magnum of vintage Grange Porphyry Pearl.)

The same Alan Jones lurvin’ Danna Vale who sent the immortal “brave and true” fax from her office. Your taxes and Donna’ faxes at work.

The very same Danna Vale who supported a Coalition-backed amendment to a bill on the abortion drug RU486 because she was concerned Australia would become dominated by Muslims.

The same Danna vale who, even the Rodent (to his credit), had to let slip over the side of the sinking ministerial ship. (Can anyone believe she was ever allowed to be Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence???!!!)

“So I’m not a scientist but I have real concerns about coming up with the recommendations of a report and then actually finding that we have not taken any evidence on that topic.”

Yes, Danna, we're all sitting at your feet breathlessly waiting for the next pearl of wisdom to drop trippingly from your incessant tongue. We know exactly what you’re on about … about 20 million ants shy of a picnic in the park.

The dinosaurs may come, the dinosaurs may go, but we shall never see her like again.

This tosser is one of the Rodent's nearest and dearest confidants. Say no more.

Heffernan accused of impersonating Joyce.

The Opposition has raised allegations in the Senate about Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan impersonating Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce.

Labor Senator Robert Ray also asked if an investigation had been launched into claims Senator Heffernan pretended to be a member of ASIO while speaking to the manager of Queensland’s Cubbie Station.

Senator Ray says Senator Heffernan’s sense of humour could get him into trouble.

“Could he also confirm that Senator Heffernan has boasted that he impersonates Senator Barnaby Joyce… and rings Queensland constituents of Mr Joyce and asks them what they think of Senator Heffernan,” he said.

But Senate leader Nick Minchin made light of the claims.

“I can confirm that Senator Heffernan has a remarkable and attractive sense of humour, which endears him to all his colleagues,” he said.

In my more deluded moments I also think I have one of them thar marginally "remarkable and attractive sense[s] of humour," which endears me to all my colleagues who aren't smart enough to make a mercifully quick getaway. I also think that were I exercise the aforementioned sense d'humour (AKA smartarsery) at any airport desporting signs indicating that such smartarse comments are the last thing you say before they excise your tongue and throw you into chokey for 10 to 20 strokes of the Julian calendar without parole.

Coonan the Bland Blonde the strikes again . Dammit, WTF happened to three strikes and yer out?!

Coonan downplays wireless interference risk

Federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan has played down Labor concerns that broadband Internet in rural areas will be interrupted by common household appliances under the Coalition’s national network.

The Government says its plan will give fast broadband to 99 per cent of the population.

Capital cities will be given fibre-optic broadband access, while regional Australia will receive wireless technology rolled out by Optus-Elders partnership Opal with almost $1 billion in Government support.

Labor says cordless phones, microwave ovens and garage doors could interfere with the wireless connection in remote areas.

But Senator Coonan says the risk of that is minimal.

“Licence spectrum would overcome some potential risk of interference from other users and [Optus-Elders partnership] Opal has indicated that opportunities for purchasing licensed spectrum in the market place will be obviously pursued,” she said.

“Licence spectrum would overcome some potential risk of interference from other users and [Optus-Elders partnership] Opal has indicated that opportunities for purchasing licensed spectrum in the market place will be obviously pursued,”

The above clear exposition of the state of play follows Helen's "Well, I don't think I'd call it "circumventing" the ACCC, I think it would more characterise it as accommodating the kind of adjustments that might be needed to enable a new very risky bill that's going to cost in the order of $4 billion. And if the current regulatory regime can't yield that outcome, well then I would look at what might be required.".

Again ... WTF!

Please convince me that this silly moo is not the worst Minister since those non blondes, Kaye Patterson and Judy Moylan beached themselves on the despatch box and disappeared sans trace?!

'Tain't rocket science, SAAH!

Youth choose uni, work over national service

The Defence Force Association says there is a shortage of young people signing up because more school leavers are going to university and unemployment levels are low.

The association’s Neil James says the only long-term solution to personnel shortages is to improve wages and conditions to make work in the Defence Force more attractive.

But he says conscription may be needed if there was ever a serious conflict in the region.

Could it be SAAH! that lots of our young bright-eyed and bushy-tailed kiddies aren't signing up on account of that other part of the Work Choices wages and conditions (no matter how sexy and 6 figured they might - but probably won't ever be) is the likelihood of being sent of to some dodgy theatre of war chosen by a 'line in the sand, we'll never 'k'n' cut'n'run' gubbermint de la jour, to be shot at, bombed and ducked in the local swimming pool by those kids (probably micks or muslins) across the street what've always looked like they woz spoiling for a barney.

Conscription! REALLY! Conscription is to a military strategy as intelligent design is to common or garden science. (Please yerselves where you put yer Stephen Hawkings and Paul Davies into that equation.)

A²+2AB+B²=Not on your Nelly, SAAH!

Pentagon trials balloons as bio-chem defence

The United States Department of Defence, the Pentagon, is floating balloons off its roof as part of a test of a new system to protect it against chemical or biological attack.

“It’s an advanced chemical and biological protection system for the Pentagon and its occupants,” Major Rebecca Goodrich Hinton said.

She said three balloons that are each 1.8 metres in diameter will be raised 30 metres over the Pentagon during the test, which is part of a series called ‘Pentagon Shield’.

The balloons will be raised and lowered from four locations on the roof of the Pentagon.

She declined to provide other details about the test, which is being conducted by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency and the Defence Department’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Directorate.
